Top 5 Tunes of 2011.

As we approach the last days of 2011, here’s my personal top 5 dancefloor tunes of the Year.

1. Julio Bashmore – Battle For Middle You

No problem in deciding as to what my number one was. Julio Bashmore has undoubtedly been the big success story of the 2011 dance music scene, and this track was his crowning moment. Based in Bristol this young produce/dj has gone from the back rooms to the top of the bill in such a short space of time, while churning out an abundance of quality House music packed full of classic sounds and futuristic grooves, in the process. ‘Battle For Middle You’ is a example of the fine state of health that contemporary house music currently finds itself in.

2. Oliver $ – Doin’ Ya Thang

This cheeky little number first came to my attention while listening to The Disconauts on the Sunday afternoon at this years Electric Picnic festival. A fairly ordinary base heavy house tunes that chugs along until its brought to life by the introduction of the caramel tones of Kenny Dixon Jr aka Moodymann. The vocal is taken from a recording of his dj set @ Cutloose, Manchester sept 2010 and turns this track into an infectious stomper that brings the dancefloor alive.

3. Faith Evans – Love Like This Before (B+S Edit)

Another slice of quality house music from the Bristol massive. This track takes the vocals from Faith Evans 1998 hit R&B track ‘Love Like This Before’ and merges it with the deep, dubby, and bass grooves from Future Boogies ‘Behling & Simpson’ to create something very special indeed.

4. LCD Soundsystem – You Wanted A Hit

Ok technically this song was release in December 2010, however i didn’t catch it until 2011, so I’m going to break ranks and include it in my top 5. This is another nugget of ‘LCD Soundsystem’ gold. Without doubt the most prolific producers of top class dancefloor indie/electronica of the past 10 years they sadly decided to call it a day this year, however this is definitely not the last we’ll hear of messrs Murphy and Mahoney.

5. Pablo & Shoey – Raw Human Emotion

This list wouldn’t be complete without a tip of the hat to some the home grown talent that’s currently producing top class edits to rival anything out there. This year has seen great tracks from the likes of Keep Stchum, as well as the Get Down lads in the sunny southeast.  However my choice is from closer to home. Pablo & Shoeys ‘Raw Human Emotion’ from theire first EP,  is a re-edit of ‘I Don’t Wanna Lose Your Love’ by The Emotions, produced by Earth Wind and Fire’s Maurice White with legendary arranger Charles Stepney. That oh so catchy chorus got lifted by Primal Scream on their classic Andrew Weatherall produced ‘Loaded’ from the even more classic ‘Screamadelica‘ LP

External Sounds Christmas Hoedown

External Sounds is having a good old Christmas Hoedown at the Purple Room on St Stephens night. Supplying the soundtrack to this festive knees up are the External Sounds residents djs, who will be joined by a live performance from Electronic/Instrumental Hip Hop duo ‘Copious’, as well as a set from one of the Drogheda’s new breed of dj talent ‘LayLow Leee’.

Couple this great musical line up with the fact of everyone’s enforced previous 2 day absence from any nightclubs, and we got all the ingredients for a real Christmas cracker!

Doors open at the earlier then usual time of 10pm. Admission is €7, with a discounted rate of €5 before midnight.

COPIOUS

Copious are an Irish electronic/ instrumental hip-hop duo consisting of musicians Dermot O Mahony and Gareth Kinsella from Drogheda Co. Louth.
The group formed in 2002 and has seen an ever-changing line up of band members over the years usually assembled to play live shows eg.Tadhg Murphy (National Philamonic and Royal Irish Chamber Orchestra), Keith Kelly (Cachimbo), Ian Earle (Rythmatix), Danny Mc Eoin (Intinn), Rob Kearney, Gary Martin and Rob Mullen (External Sounds Dj’s).
In 2011 the band reverted back to the two founding members and have been producing synth and MPC based music with live drums since then.
The duo are set to release their debut EP Attack From The Attic in mid 2012, which promises to deliver their usual blend of wailing synthesized sounds with monstrous beats, along with some more melodic and chilled out electronic rock and hip hop arrangements.

LayLow Leee

Leee is one of a wealth of young dj talent currently coming to the surface of the local electronic music scene. A regular guest at several club nights in the towns Purple Room venue, he has recently launched his own night called ‘Who Cares!?’ Not your conventional young dj, leee keeps his eclectic sets, deep & dubby, but most definitely always groovy.

Downtown Sounds is proud to present yet another Dublin ramraid by Manchester’s finest DJ duo, The Unabombers.

They ran a much-loved night in the rainy city for 13 years called ‘Electric Chair’, releasing 7 mix albums of their inimitable ‘Northern Sulphuric Souling’ style – a heady brew of soul, hip hop, freaky deaky r’n’b, diva disco, house, techno and other 21st Century dancefloor slayers.

Since winding up Electric Chair in early 2008 they’ve gone on to run ‘Electric Elephant’, a 4 day festival in the Adriatic coastal town of Petrcane, a beautiful place which many people have dubbed ‘The New Ibiza’.

Next year will see it celebrate it’s 5th Year, with a heavyweight line up featuring Andrew Weatherall and Chris Duckenfield already gaining momentum…

Support on the night comes from Dublin’s Michael McKenna, whose DJ-friendly edits of old disco tracks under the alias ‘Keep Schtum’ helped bag him a slot at Electric Elephant this year. His edit of Odyssey’s ‘Hang Together’ has become an anthem with the Electriks crowd so we should see much backslapping and blokey bonhomie as he hands the reins over to the UB’s……

Meanwhile in The Lobby our friends at Fatty Fatty Phonographics will be celebrating the release of their debut 12” – ‘The Rejigs Volume 1’ by Pablo and Shoey.

Featuring the disco know-how of Downtownsounds/Fatty Fatty messer Pablo and the production trickery of Shoey of the External Sounds crew from Drogheda, it showcases three discofunk bombs reworked for the modern dancefloor, and is already garnering DJ support from local stalwarts like Billy Scurry, Padraic Disconaut and Martin Roche, not to mention overseas action from the likes of Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45’s, London) and ex Tresor resident DJ Raw Sugar all the way down in New Zealand!

To mark the occasion of the release Fatty Fatty’s mysterious man of records G-Mos will be joined by External Sounds DJ’s for what should be an epic show of local disco force….

Fatty Fatty Phonographics Launch First EP.

We are delighted to announce that the very first release on our Fatty Fatty Phonographics label is imminent.

Constructed with love and no small measure of JUST PLAY THE FUCKIN’ NOTE! by Pablo and Shoey, it’s entitled The Rejigs Volume 1

It will feature re-works off tracks by The Emotions, Glady Knight and The Pips and Bernard Purdie on lovely fat 12 inch black vinyl, and will also be available as a download for you modern types.

Pablo is of course a stalwart of the Fatty Fatty crew, while Shoey is the resident production whizz from External Sounds, a Drogheda based collective with the same spirit and soul.

First on the chopping block is the rambunctious disco-funk of The Emotions’ ‘I Don’t Wanna Lose Your Love’. Produced by Earth, Wind and Fire’s Maurice White and legendary arranger Charles Stepney, this one plays heavily on the gospel flavoured vocal breakdown and heavy funk horns, which Andy Weatherall et al chewed a chunk off of for the Primal Scream classic ‘Loaded’.

Following Dead Rose Music Company’s recent hypno-house floor-smasher ‘Just A Bitter Love’, the lads take the Gladys Knight belter ‘Taste Of Bitter Love’ and put the song right back at the centre, playing around with the luscious piano line and keening strings, even creating a dreamy new 2 step outro for sweet and smooth mixing out.

Last but not least we have legendary funky drummer Bernard Purdie and his 1972 cut ‘Good Livin’ Good Lovin’. It’s a heavy funk bomb with a psychedelic wah-wah led intro and an absolutely killer piano line, not to mention some wise words from Bill Cosby on the jazz, lifted from obscuro American cult comedy show ‘The Simpsons’. Another one for the sample spotters amongst you, fans of The Prodigy will immediately cop it as the base of their mammoth ’3 Kilos’.

There will be a couple of launch parties to coincide with the release, the first in conjunction with Belfast Music Club at The Menagerie, Friday November 25th, where Jimmy B and Pablo will be going head to head with our nordy disco brothers. Nicky Siano could not say enough good things about their intimate 200 capacity sweatbox after playing there at the end of last month and we can’t wait to make a return trip.

The following day – Saturday 26th – we’ll be hot-tailing it back to Dublin in time for a Downtownsounds/Fatty Fatty team up as Manchester’s all conquering DJ duo The Unabombers return to Dublin @ The POD.

This will serve as a nice warm up for our Downtownsounds Classics series, celebrating the anthems of the long running Dublin DJ crew that now hoists it’s flag to the Nightlfight mast.

We’ll begin in the New Year with the re-issue of Nicky Siano and Arthur Russell’s disco classic ‘Kiss Me Again’ and a 21st Century bomb we’re holding in reserve for the moment.

Both tracks will be given the Pablo and Shoey Rejig treatment for extended dancefloor goodness.

External Sounds are delighted to announce that we will be throwing a special spooky Halloween Party at the Purple Room on Bank Holiday Sunday 30th of October. For this party we are very excited to have party dj extraordinaire ‘A Skillz’ as our special guest on the night.

A true showman, A Skillz incredible live performances involve mashing up funk, hip-hop and breaks with his unique style of scratching and mixing for an amazing genre hopping extravaganza that is certain to have the Purple Room rocking to its foundations! As its Halloween are inviting everybody to get their best fancy dress costume on, with Spot prizes for the best costumes on the night.

Shawn Scott Jones family to raise funds for momerial.

Earlier this year we sadly lost renowned Bass player Shawn Jones. Originally from Philadelphia, Shawn lived and played in Ireland for many years. We had the pleasure of him performing in our tent @ Electric Picnic 09. His family are currently trying to sell some of his gear so they can put up a headstone for him in Philly. External Sounds Is 10!

At The end of July 2011, External Sounds will be celebrating 10 years of dancing in fields. So 10 years on since our first foray out in Townley Hall Woods, we have decided to celebrate alfresco! We will be throwing a special party on the lawn of the Millhouse, Slane on Bank Holiday Sunday 31st of July. Our resident djs will be joined by some of our nearest and dearest friends to celebrate what has been 10 of the most amazing years of gigs and parties.
We will be running a return bus out to the party at 8pm from the Fairgreen, Drogheda. Tickets are 10 euros are can be purchased from the Town Centre Barbers, Stockwell St, Drogheda.

Admission on the door will be €10, There will be a full bar on site, so you will not be permitted to bring alcohol on site.
The External Sounds Djs will be be doing a special in store birthday gig in Town Centre Barbers, on Saturday afternoon 30th of July.

External Sounds @ Body & Soul Festival 2011

External Sounds are delighted to announce that we will be hosting our own Stage at this years Body & Soul Festival, which takes place on the weekend of June 18th & 19th on the grounds of Ballinlough Castle, Co. Westmeath.

After the success of last year’s inaugural event, the organisers have again put together an impressive programme of music and performance arts including theatre, poetry, acrobatics and much more, that is sure to establish the festival as one of the summers top events. Headliners include Fat Freddy’s Drop, The Field, Toro y Moi, Lamb, Lee Scratch Perry, Mount Kimbie, Lisa Hannigan & Don Letts. With a small increase from last years capacity to just 2500, the festival will still be maintaining its small numbers and laid-back atmosphere, but will also be packed full of the usual artistic and musical treats that you would expect from the Body & Soul experience.

External Sounds will host a Stage  in the woodland part of the castle’s beautiful Victorian walled gardens. By taking the good atmosphere and broad musical style of our events and merging it with the atmosphere and ethos of Body and Soul we plan to create something really special. The stage will be a mix of music styles such as Soul, Folk, Funk, Latin, Afrobeat, & Reggae mixed with Disco, & Deep House grooves. Our resident External Sounds dj’s will be joined by special guests such as Trenchtown, Subject Djs, Conall Bailey & Band, Tom Beary, Sarah O’Brien, Dj Pablo, The Getup, Belfast Music Club Djs, and many more still to be announced.

Trenchtown

We are chuffed to have 2Tone/Ska/Reggae band Trenchtown performing as part of out line up for this years Body & Soul festival. Formed back in 1988, Trenchtown are one of Ireland’s finest purveyors of this musical genre, and have consistently wowed their audiences with their bouncy reggae and furious ska sound. The band came to prominence in 1989 when they reached the final of the coveted Hot Press Magazine ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition, where they were narrowly beaten by ‘Just A Philistine’. In their long career they have supported acts such as Bad Manners, The Special Beat and The Motivators, while performing in many of Ireland’s top venues, as well as an appearance at the Brixton Academy in London. Conall Bailey & Band

Singer song writer Conall Bailey joins us on the Stage with full live band to showcase some of his songs from his debut album ‘Finding Holes’.
Two years in the making, `Finding Holes´ featured over twenty artists, some hailing from as far afield as New Zealand. This performance promises to be as eclectic as Baileys´ repertoire of musical instruments. A key figure in the Drogheda music scene the singer songwriter is a founder member of trad six piece The Albaquirky Turkeys and alternative rock band Super Turbo Ninja Club, as well as a regular at open mic sessions. Subject Djs

Subject DJs will be bringing their deep, funky Deep House and Disco orientated vibe to the Body & Soul festival. As resident djs at Subject events they have supported the likes of Horse Meat Disco, Faze Action, Chris Duckenfield, Hercules And Love Affair, Bill Brewster, Jimpster and The Revenge to name a few. Tom Beary (Scribble Soundsystem)

Joining us for this years Body & Soul Festival is top Reggae/Dancehall selector, and Scribble Soundsystem main man, Tom Beary. Tom is resident dj at Bodytonic’s Scribble night @ the Bernard Shaw in Dublin. He is also a member of the brilliant Scribble Soundsystem, a live band that incorporates Dj’s, Percussion, and MC’s to create a live music experience that is guaranteed to get the room bouncing! Sarah O’Brien

Drogheda native Sarah O’Brien maybe pretty new to the scene, but already has impressed those who have seen her perform, and her stocks have been rapidly rising. Sarah began to cut her teeth less then a year ago playing open mic gigs around Drogheda and from these performances received invitations to play at more established music events such as The Garden Room Sessions, Drogheda Fringe Festival & The Beat On The Boyne Festival. Her folk, and acoustic reggae sound draws influences from the likes of Johnny Flynn, Laura Marling and Scott Mathews. for a taste of what to expect from her performance click HERE

Pablo (Fatty Fatty)

Dj Pablo or Paul Forgarty to his mum, is a definitely a dj who the word eclectic is apply applied. Not one to get tied into one type of musical genre, his dj sets are carefully crafted from the finest cuts of music with funk and feeling no matter what the genre – his ethos is ‘if it’s got a groove to make you move, it goes into the record bag’. No stranger to festival performances, Paul has previously performed for External Sounds at Electric Picnic 08 & 09, as well as playing our stage at last years Body & Soul Festival. Belfast Music Club Djs

We also welcome our northern brothers in the form of the Belfast Music Club Djs. Their monthly night in Belfast’s Menagerie venue is one of the cities best club nights, with the resident djs sharing the dj box with international guests such as The Unabombers, Mark E, Feel My Bicep, as well as up and coming local talent, and home town heroes such as Timmy Stewart & David Holmes. The Getup

The Getup were formed in late 2010, from the ashes of funksters ‘Urban Box Social’. After losing two of the band to emigration, the remaining members Shane and Thomas decided to keep the buzz they had generated going, and recruited a new drummer and keyboard player to form the new band that they describe as being “An original instrumental act with a funky twist”. Staying with the funk, they decided to bring originality to a timeless genre. With inspiration from jazz/funk acts like Soulive to as far afield as post-rock Tortoise, The Getup’s sound creates an infectious dance atmosphere with a multitude of sounds, thumping bass lines and beats that is sure to help you get your groove on.

Craig C

Also joining us for the festivities is Subculture resident Dj Craig C. Craig who is currently based in the UK, has been on the scene for almost 13 years and is a versatile dj but specialises in Hip Hop & Drum & Bass. As well as setting up Subculture, Craig has also been a resident dj with Milk Soundsystem as well as regular appearances at the MUD nights at Dublin’s Twisted Pepper club, where he has supported drum and Bass heavyweights such as ‘S.P.Y’, ‘Shy FX’ and ‘Everson’. External Sounds Presents… The Beat On The Boyne Afterparty

External Sounds are delighted to be hosting the official Afterparty of Beat On The Boyne Festival 2011. The Beat On The Boyne returns again to bring the best of local talent and music to the streets of Drogheda over the June Bank Holiday Weekend. External Sounds will be hosting the Afterparty at The Purple Room on the bank holiday sunday night, and will feature local funk band ‘The Getup’, and the External Sounds djs.

Our live band on the night The Getup were formed in late 2010, from the ashes of Drogheda’s funksters Urban Box Social. Shane (guitar) and Thomas (bass) decided to take things a step further and recruited Joe (drums & percussion) and John (keyboard & synth) to form an original instrumental act with a funky twist. All members hailing from the area, they decided to bring originality to a timeless genre. With inspiration from jazz/funk acts like Soulive to as far afield as post-rock Tortoise, The Getup creates a dance atmosphere that has never been seen before in Drogheda. With a multitude of sounds, thumping bass lines and beats that won’t stop you from moving, The Getup are ones to watch in the future as they begin the process of building something beautiful.

As ever the External Sounds djs will be on hand to keep the dancefloor bouncing throughout the night. It all kicks off at 11pm. Admission is €7, with a reduced entry of €5 before midnight. The usual recession friendly beer promotions will be available at the bar all night.

Irish DJ stalwart, equally comfortable and capable of playing Disco, House and/or Techno and rocking the crowd every time… From the early days at Sides and Temple Of Sound to more recent times DJing for a selection of Irelands best promoters/clubs and currently holding a residency at The South William, Scurry has constantly moved with the times earning buckets of respect from promoters, DJs and music lovers both at home and abroad. Daz & Martin – Get Down, Waterford

Daz & Martin have been collecting vinyl since the mid ’90′s and playing records in clubs since 1998ish but it wasn’t until 2001 that they put their heads [and music] together and began DJing as a duo. Since then they have played every major club night & venue in the Southeast and supported many national and international acts including; Kenny Dope [M.A.W.], DJ Deep, Kerri Chandler, DJ Harri, Yousef, Ben Watt, Fish Go Deep, Charles Webster, Frank Roger & Atjazz to name a few… In recent years they have been busy running and promoting their own club night ‘Get Down’. Pete Cadden – Amen Brother/MN, Monaghan

Pete is one of the residents and founders of Monaghan’s – Amen Brother, the MN Collective’s outlet for Funk, Soul, Hip Hop, Disco and the other pet sounds that the residents and their guests wouldn’t normally get to play out at a club night. Currently running on the first Friday of the month in the intimate and stylish settings of Odessa Club [Dame Court, Dublin], the promotion strives to offer something a little different. Case in point, Detroit legend Mike Huckaby soon makes his Irish debut DJing at a special MN Sun Ra party.

Scribble Sound System – Scribble/Bodytonic, Dublin

The Scribble Sound System was formed in February 2009, when Scribble DJs Tom Beary and G. Frequency joined forces with MC Little Tree and session musician Chucky to create Dublin’s freshest collective. Dancehall, Reggae, Dubstep, Soulful beats and G. Frequency’s original Hip-Hop productions are used as a solid foundation and then mixed with live scratching, effects, vocals and percussion. Louis Scully – Discotekken, Dublin

Louis Scully began DJing in clubs in early 2009. Later that year he landed a residency at 12 Sundays in the Bernard Shaw and by September ’09 started his club night ‘Discotekken’, which continues to run monthly in the Twisted Pepper. Louis has brought over acts such as Juju & Jordash, Dmx Krew, I-F, Space Dimension Controller & many more. Louis’ next few gigs will see him warm up for Greg Wilson, Ceephax Acid Crew and play both Sibin & Life festivals, respectively…

External Sounds DJs – The Purple Room, Drogheda

External Sounds is a collective of DJs, musicians & visual artists from Drogheda, Co Louth. Celebrating their 10th Birthday this July, their monthly nights in their hometown have featured guests such as; Norman Jay, Ashley Beedle, Luke Unabomber and Motor City Drum Ensemble… The ES DJs eclectic party style and approach to performing has lead to invites to play at many venues and club nights nationally and in the UK, Finland & Croatia. They have also played festivals such as DEAF, Sibin, Escape, Body & Soul Festival, Electric Picnic and the Electric Elephant. External Sounds have hosted their own tent at the Electric Picnic Festival since 2008.

Calvin James – Speedoman, Dublin

Calvin James started DJing in New York 12 years ago and has held residencies there, in Miami, Barcelona and Dublin… He is best known for his unorthodox mixing style, combining turntablism with Disco, House and Techno techniques. It was this mixing style that lead to his infamous ’4 Decks And No Headphones’ sets, debuted at the first Electric Picnic [2004] before going on to perform at various club shows. A firm favorite in Irish clubs and at festivals, Calvin is also a Bacardi B-Bar regular.
