External Sounds @ The Drogheda Arts Festival

April 7, 2010

Continuing on from the last post we are staying with the festival theme. As we approach the May bank holiday weekend it brings with it the start of the festival season. Friday 30th of April is the opening day of The Drogheda Arts Festival and External Sounds are delighted to once again be involved in the festival. After last years brilliant collaboration with the Arts Council in bringing Dj Norman Jay to the town, we have once again acquired the services of another musical great in the form of Dj Asley Beedle.

Ashley is one of most respected dj’s on the circuit. From starting out playing on the soundsystems at the world famous Notting Hill Carnival, through to becoming one of the U.K.’s most celebrated house producers in the late ’90s, and currently turning out some serious dancefloor stomping disco re-edits, this artist is a true great who’s production & Dj’ing always sounds fresh and entertaining even if it has one foot in the past. Like Norman Jay, he  is a musical all rounder who’s dj sets are very assessable and cross many different genres but always keeps the emphasis on the groove.

External Sounds Djs Andrew K & Rob Mullen will also be playing support to ZERO 7 who will be doing a dj set @ The Purple Room as part of the Arts Festival. For those of you that don’t know Zero 7 are a Grammy Award-nominated, downtempo styled musical duo comprising of Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker from the United Kingdom. They have released 5 studio albums, and over the course of their career they have worked with the likes of Radiohead, Lenny kravitz, Jose Gonzalez, Terry Callier & Lambchop to name but a few.

Its great that artists such as these are playing a town like Drogheda, and it shows the Arts Festival organisers commitment to developing the festival to rival anything similar in the country. It is also great for collectives like External Sounds to receive this type of support from the Arts Council and its also a good opportunity for local artists to share the stage with established international artists, as well as been a great oppertunity to display the dept of talent that there is within the town itself.

These are just two events in an extensive programme that the local Arts Council have put together for the festival.  It all kicks off on Friday 30th of April and runs over the weekend until  Monday 3rd of May.
