External Sounds Presents… Don Letts (BBC 6 Music)

March 28, 2012

External Sounds are more than a little excited to have the legendary Rebel Dread himself Mr DON LETTS at The Purple Room on Saturday 5th of May as part of The Drogheda Arts Festival 2012.

Don Letts has been at the cultural cutting edge of music and film since the 1970’s. His dj residency at the infamous London Punk club ‘The Roxy’, is widely acknowledged as the catalyst for the merging of Punk and Dub Reggae genres that came to prominence in the music of bands such as The Clash & PIL. Bob Marley, who was living in London at the time, recognised these developments with his 1977 song Punky Reggae Party.

Along with ex Clash guitarist Mick Jones, he formed ‘Big Audio Dynamite’ in 1984. They quickly established themselves as an innovative group with their signature sound incorporating Reggae, Hip-Hop, Punk Rock, Funk and Dance Music. He went on to perform and co-write four albums with B.A.D. achieving several hits on both sides of the Atlantic including the top ten hit E=Mc2.

During this period he also became revered as a film maker. His first movie, ‘The Punk Rock Movie‘ documented the emerging music scene during this time . His fly on the wall footage of The Clash was later made into ‘Westway To The World’, which won him a Grammy in 2003. He has produced dozens of films and documentaries on various music movements, with artists such as Gil Scott Heron, Sun Ra, Franz Ferdinand, and The Jam, to name but a few.
As well as his film work he continues to push musical boundaries through his weekly radio show ‘Culture Clash’ on BBC Radio 6.

External Sounds Presents… Jason Boardman (Aficionado, Manchester)

January 14, 2011

After a couple of thwarted attempts External Sounds is delighted to finally have selector supremo Jason Boardman coming to The Purple Room to play at our February event.

In a career spanning over 20 years Jason Boardman has been resident at seminal Manchester clubs such as Yellow, Hard Times and the iconic Hacienda. Jason has also made regular guest appearances at other established Manchester nights like, Stylus, Electric Chair a…nd El Diablo’s Social Club.

His own night Aficionado is now on the go for over 10 years, and has become something of an institution in Manchester. Along with his musical partner Moonboots, he has ran the night in various venues around the rainy city with it inspiring numerous imitators to start their own ‘Balearic Soirees’. Aficionado’s popularity is mainly due to the pairs unique and varied Balearic DJ style and musical knowledge. Their annual appearances at the Electric Elephant Festival in Croatia, have become like a mecca for people looking to experience a true early balearic vibe that’s now impossible to find on the over commercialized white isle.

A true vinyl addict Jason is one of the few djs that can still be found digging for records in Manchester’s many charity shops. This is reflected in his unique & well thought out DJ sets that are made up of tunes selected from his extensive back catalogue of soul, funk, disco, and electronic music from the last 30 years “I have had the good fortune to have a career as a DJ yet remained steadfast in avoiding potential banana skins by playing the music i love and cherish. I play what i want, this is anything good, though my main loves are dirty dusty disco, Balearic chuggers and electronic oddities.”

Over the course of his career he has performed in countries such as India, Venezuela, Romania, Portugal, France, Russia, and Croatia to name a few. This is his first performance in Ireland in over 6 years, so don’t miss this opportunity to catch a true musical craftsman behind the decks.

Doors open at 11pm and admission is €6.
